Bioimpedance scales for body assessment.
A bioimpedance scale is useful in a body assessment when you want speed and a clear trend between assessments. PounceFit reads the scale over your computer's Bluetooth and calculates body composition with the client's data. The model tested with a real device is the ICOMON FI2001B-E, with 8 electrodes.
Which scales work.
- ICOMON (protocol v107)Compatible. For example the FI2001B-E: weight, impedance and segments (arms, legs and trunk). Tested with the real device.
- OKOKIn testing. Generic scales that use the OKOK app: weight and impedance, foot to foot.
- Xiaomi Mi Body Composition Scale 2In testing. Models XMTZC02HM and XMTZC05HM: weight and impedance, foot to foot.
- Standard Bluetooth weight profileWeight only, no body composition.
"In testing" means the app reads the protocol from public documentation, but it has not been checked with a real device yet. The official list is on Compatible scales.
What the scale measures in the app.
Live weight, body fat, lean mass, water, muscle, bone, visceral fat, protein, basal metabolic rate and metabolic age. On the ICOMON, by segment too.
The app stores the raw impedance and calculates with the manufacturer formula (the default) or with published research equations, which you choose in Settings.
Are bioimpedance scales reliable?
They give repeatable results and show the trend well. For a single person, though, they can be less accurate than well-taken skinfolds.
Readings shift with hydration, meals, training and time of day. 4-electrode scales measure through the feet only and tend to be less accurate than 8-electrode ones. That is why the app never mixes scale and skinfold results in its charts.
How to measure so results compare.
- In the morning, fasted, with an empty bladder.
- Before training.
- Clean, dry feet.
- Same device, same time of day.
- Measured height, not self-reported.
No compatible scale? Use skinfolds: the Jackson & Pollock 7-site calculator and 3-site vs 7-site: which to use.
Frequently asked questions
Which bioimpedance scale should I use with PounceFit?
The one tested with a real device is the ICOMON FI2001B-E (protocol v107), with 8 electrodes. Before buying another one, check the list of compatible scales.
Is an 8-electrode scale better than a 4-electrode one?
An 8-electrode scale measures through the feet and the hands, so the app can show arms, legs and trunk separately. 4-electrode scales measure through the feet only and tend to be less accurate.
My scale is not on the list. Will it work?
Probably not. The app recognizes a scale by its signal, and scales from other makers are rejected. Founder and Courtesy accounts can send a capture of their scale from inside the app, under Feedback.
Can I compare scale results with skinfold results?
No. Each method keeps its own history, and different scales don't compare with each other either. To track a client, keep the same method and the same device.
Do I need the manufacturer's phone app?
No. Keep the manufacturer's app closed during the assessment: the scale connects to one device at a time.
